hi, I have a VW Golk MK5 (2004) 2.0 GT TDI (78,000 miles, FSH).... I noticed over the weekend when driving the car that the turbo was kicking in intermittently, and at one point I was driving a couple of miles and could not feel the pace/ turbo kick-in. When I stopped and after an hour or so drove the car again there were no problems. I did not notice any warning lights on the dash when experiencing this problem

Any advice wellcome please!!

I’m not saying that this is what’s happening with your vehicle but it does sound familiar to one of my customer’s TDI.
He was experiencing an intermittent loss of turbo functions; it turned out to be worn camshaft lobes.
With the worn cam lobes the engine vacuum was lower then what it should have been. The computer monitors this vacuum along with other sensor inputs. If the computer didn’t see all of the proper/required values from the sensors, it would not allow the turbo to function. No codes were set in the diagnostics due to the vacuum was still above the threshold for setting a code.
Sometimes under the right circumstances and driving conditions; the engine would produce the proper or enough vacuum and the computer would allow turbo.
Even with the worn camshaft; you wouldn’t have known there was an issue (other then no turbo function) the engine seemed to run ok.
What we found; as the cause of the worn camshaft was that the customer was unintentionally using the wrong type motor oil.
Certain years of these TDI’s need to use a VW or its equivalent # 505 01. rated synthetic motor oil.
I guess there’s some form of friction modifier added to this oil too lessen the ware to the camshafts. The Germans would never say oops we made a mistake; they just change the oil requirements.
