99 grand prix gtp

alright, so I drove my gtp for awhile today. Stopped for a meeting of 2 hours, went to the grocery store and when I came out...
Well, I turned the key, the car started and I put my foot on the brake to put it in reverse to pull out and the car just died. all electricals are dead and I couldn't get the key out of the ignition. I tried everything, turning the steering wheel and trying to get it out of park and nothing. I have no idea what is wrong as I am a beginner to all this. I had it towed to a local shop but would appreciate any insight to this.
