My girlfriend has a 99 galant. I think she ran too low on oil. The mechanic who changed her oil, said she had a rear main leak a while back..

She broke down on the sid eof the road, when I went to look at it, i put 2 quarts of oil in it before start up. When i started it it made a rattling sound like marbles, and only ran for about 10 seconds before it dies..

Either a bad lifter or broken piston rod.. thoughts??

if its the piston rod.. is it worth fixing?

147k on engine.. or get a new engine..

Arggh! It was driven apparently low or out of oil till it broke down! Wouldn't take long to cause hopeless damage. The "marble" sound could have been that it couldn't build up pressure enough in the 10 seconds to properly lube bearings, adjust hydraulic lifters and an outside chance if oil is restored to proper level it could run again but it's damaged goods IMO.

If vehicle doesn't smooth out, at the age and otherwise in good shape I'd price out a whole, original used motor from a salvage yard that's good at determining good ones from junk.

You'd have to ask how much that would cost vs value of vehicle and decide from there. I'm NOT a fan of fixing an engine with that history,

If you decide to put a used motor in as Tom suggested and I would as well, do yourself a favor and put it on a stand. Replace all the gaskets and seals that like to leak. A new timing belt and tensioner wouldn't be a bad idea while its easy to get at. I have done a few of these and always replace things like that prior to install. Never trust a used rear main seal. Thats what helped this to happen in the first place. Also, time to teach your girl how to check oil to prevent future problems. I had an ex do the same thing when I was out of state and she blew a motor out of my vehicle because she didn't check the oil. Feel your pain.
