Have a 99 chevy suburban, 5.7 V-8. Was pulling out to pass the other day, accelerated & vehicle downshifted. The service engine soon light started flashing & then the vehicle started sputtering and missing. Took to mechanic, he said the "# 5 cylinder is showing no compression". Advised he checked for more minor causes, nothing & will have to go into the motor. I'm no mechanic, way over my head. Any ideas as to what happened here, what will be the solution & what kind of expense I will be looking at? The vehicle has 120K miles on it, but was running perfectly before this happened & used no oil or anything.

The first thing he needs to do is pull the valve cover off and make sure there are no broken valve spring or rocker problems but I'm thinking you have a timing chain problem, assuming there was no overheating or oil loss before this happened. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
