I have a 99 VW Jetta, and noticed a few days ago a clicking noise from the engine that seems to get faster with engine speed. I checked the oil, when first pulled out after turning on the engine the dipstick had some oil on it, but after wiping it and dipping again, it was dry. I topped it up with 2 quarts but it made no difference, and noticed a yellow sludge under the oil cap. Its been about 4000 miles since my last oil change. Any ideas? Thanks!

Two quarts low is really pushing it! Did that at least put it to full mark? If that sludgy looking stuff was just on the cap and weather has been extreme a little might be normal. If you found that on dipstick too it might be coolant in the oil indicative of a head gasket problem.
It may be trouble already but I'd try an oil and filter change at once and look at it daily if need be. If you are lucky and it shapes up change it again real soon,

Actually, putting 2 quarts made no difference to the oil on the dipstick - it still had next to nothing on it. The yellowish sludge wasn't on the dipstick, it was just under the cap. The coolant level is where it should be, though I haven't looked at it recently enough to tell if it's gone down enough to point to a leak. I did notice some oil on the engine around the oil cap, though it is just a thin coat and is isolated to that area, and doesn't appear to be a whole lot so it could just be spillage from a previous oil change - a few changes ago i noticed a burning oil smell for a while.

If two quarts didn't read yet on dipstick and the stick is correct you are in trouble! At least fill it up to the "safe" area and decide what you want to do. Luck for this is thin now. Perhaps get it fully diagnosed as to whether it's worth working on that engine or bail out for another,
