99 Malibu 2.4 dohc.

Crap engine, I know. Has 145-150 compression across all 4. Engine runs, but not over about 35. Too far away to get it scanned. Dealer says $100.00 to flash the ecm. Has no brakes. Owner took calipers & rotors off months ago. Should I get into this thing?

That's not a bad engine. The ignition system is different. Severe misfire is usually caused by a bad coil housing. Calipers, pads and rotors shouldn't cost more that $150.

Am i reading that you're thinking of buying this car or just working on it ? Malibus for the most part are ok cars but wouldn't make my "great car list". Parts are usually pretty reasonable and as for the 2.4 engine its actually become a pretty reliable engine and the running problem is likely a misfire caused by a faulty coil pack that kills 2 cylinders under the aluminum cover on the top of the engine held down by 4 13mm bolts.more imformation would be helpful ..good luck

This is a Quad4 engine with a completely different design. The coil housing acts as a distributor cap in this design.

YEP, that's what it looks like. I'll go for the coil housing . Don't think the large cover on top would be the problem. Thanks HT.

It should be readily available at aftermarket parts stores. It's a good idea to change the spark plug boots too while you're in there.

Ah..., This is the same engine as the pontiac sunefire GT and the chevy cavaliar z24 rite?
I want to learn as much about this engine as possible cause my friend has a sunfire GT with high miles so i'd like to know stuff about it in advanced.

Back to the Malibu. I have the car, not bad looking. not that many options either. Bought new rotors, pads & calipers. I would like to know the name of the genius that designed the battery drainage tray. My first attempt at bleeding, filled master, fluid leaks on the frame below the battery. Note that I had NOT pushed on the brake pedal, I'm using a vacuum bleeder which ought to do the job. Fill the master and fluid drips down to the frame. Took battery box out, took air cleaner box out, located the leaking line. There is a plasiic funnel if you will, that directs any battery acid leaving the battery box DIRECTLY onto the brake lines. Like I said, I applied no pedal pressure, just filled the master and found the drip. IF there were no recalls on this, there should have been. This is a 99 MALIBU with 113 K on it. I think the running issue is corrected but won't know until I have the corroded brake lines replaced. Just my time to vent. If any recalls are found, please let me know.
