99 Jimmy Balance Shaft or Timing Chain? Sign In

I have a 99 Jimmy...was making engine noise, thought it was a valve problem. I have removed the lifters push rods to see if they are bent but all good.

When I hand crank the engine to watch the valves move, I can only turn it so far before it stops...it becomes stuck. I can crank the engine it the opposite direction and the valves move but only to a certain point and it becomes stuck again.

Could this be a timing chain issue or something to do woth the balancer shaft??

Thanks
Max.

max; This doesn't sound good? Sounds like either a cylinder has hydro-locked or a thrown rod. Remove the spark plugs and try turning the engine by hand, again....with the ignition in the OFF position. Then, report back.

All plugs have already been removed, I was turning it by hand with the plugs in and it seemed a little tough so I removed them to release any pressure
It seems to be turning the same, even with them out.

I think I should be able to crank the engine by hand a full 360 degrees but it stops anout half way and I don't want to force it any more. It will alow me to crank it back in the opposite direction for the same amount of distance then stops.

everything seems ok with the valves, push rods ect.

I just can't figure out what is stopping it from turning any further, thought it may be the timing chanine or something with the balancer shaft???????

I'm going to look at the starter in the morning and don't really want to pull the engine if I don't have to....thought you may have some suggestions????

Max; There's only a couple of scenarios that I can think of. If the timing chain took a dump, you could have a piston hitting a valve, which I doubt. The other would be if a rod let go. I'm assuming this is the 4.3 engine, which doesn't use a balance shaft, btw. And, I don't think it's an interference type engine.

ok thanks for your help....it is a 4.3 and I thought that the shaft was a balancer shaft.......that's what it looks like...LOL.
