I have a 99 Mitsubishi Gallant its got almost 200k, it dose have a valve cover gasket leak but its not bad, So anywho...if the car sits for more than 12 hrs and its really cold out the car makes a rapping sound when its 1st started, the sound goes away after a couple minutes and dosnt come back untill the car sits for long. It recently had an oil change by some HACKS and they put on the paperwork that it was a Marage which is a differant car, so Im wondering if the oil is maybe too thin? or is it some kind of oil pressure sensor that isnt working correctly? and I dont know what kind od oil I should replace in it Thanks -Dan ADD ON= This car really dosnt burn much oil, I check oil daily and its definatly not low, do you think the oil is too thick for the colder weather? yesterday morning it was warmer and the car didnt do it,

Did this just happen with the oil change? Check the oil level now! Just found between Mirage and Gallant there could be a ONE quart difference in capacity from 3.5 to 4.5 qts.

That aside if this just started with the oil change then you might want to change to a different viscosity oil to minimize this.

We don't really know what's in there do we? At this many miles you may try a couple and see what helps most or at all. I suggest synthetics for anything and that alone can help - flows faster when cold by its nature.

Some guesswork to know what to suggest. Look at oil pressure gauge when starting up cold. Does it shoot right up to the high end of the "normal" range right away or is there a delay?

If engine doesn't consume much or any oil between changes I suggest synthetic 10-30 grade. 5-30 for colder weather - below ZERO if applicable but either should work out. If it does consume oil jump up to 15-?? something for warmer weather.

Lots of miles friend - who can know how many more without some work??
