99 Olds Alero
2.4L engine/4 cylinder
117K miles with a rebuilt engine...odometer reads 147K

My car has had 2 instances of blowing white smoke. The first was about a month ago. It happened when I got on the highway. My car acted like it was going to die. The smoke went away and the car accelerated again. All was back to normal. Today, I put oil in my car (slightly too much...just above the fill line). After that, the smoke happened again. It was very heavy to the point that I couldn't see cars behind me. Again, it acted like it was going to die and almost did. I pulled in a parking lot and let it sit for about 15 minutes. When I started to drive home (1 mile), it happened again and did it the whole way home. Was I just burning the oil off because I put a little too much in? I thought oil smoke was a bluish color? My smoke was white as could be and my engine smells horrible...like coolant and something else...but my coolant is where it should be and the color it should be. Am I burning oil or have I blown a head gasket?

White smoke is usually coolant burning and bluish oil as you seem to know.

Most all cars can handle being a little low or too high on oil. Dipsticks are not very exact at amounts not marked. If it was just a little too much oil I really doubt that caused anything by itself,
