You can damage the vehicle by driving it too lean.

I hate when Autozone counter people diagnose vehicles in their parking lot with nothing but a code reader. They must have some sort of crystal ball behind the counter. Their job is to sell parts. 90% of the time their diagnosis are incorrect.

Yeah, but look at all the business they create for us with their constant incorrect diagnosis.

Most transmission shops are pretty good at diagnosing transmission problems . Very seldom will they base their est of repairs on just a code scan . They will say... we'll have to do a few tests to verify condition. Parts houses are pretty good at selling the part that the customer asked for. Give them just a part number and they will say.....We'll have to verify the part on our system . Tire and brake shops ,,,,YADA YADA YADA . But pull in with a check engine light on a car with muti-port sequencel fuel injection , varible valve dual overhead cam . Four onboard computer systems and they will send out their top tire buster , Transmission R&R guy , spark plug top seller, with a scan tool and "DIAGNOSE " the problem in less than a minute. Go figure.

All good points & advise...

The only thing I would throw out is a P1151 is an 02 performance code. Normally with lean conditions you will get also get a P0171, P0174 or both along with the perf codes..

While not impossible to get without the lean bank codes, I would definitely test the bank 2 upstream 02 before throwing any parts at it....

How the hell did AZ diag a manifold gasket in the parking lot????? Geeeez these guys are smoking manifolds for free now???? Man it is gettin tough out there....

i took your advice and took my wife fishing. how do you test a 02 sensor to see if that is the problem.

Re: 98 ford taurus se 3.0 auto zone Manifold gasket p1151 02 switchbank sensor Sign In

You will need to buy a digital voltmeter .A good inexpensive one can be had at Radio SHACK .Set your voltmeter to millivolts (mV) and back probe the O2 sensor signal wire with the meter's red lead; connect the meter's black lead to a good ground on your vehicle. A regular oxygen sensor only has one wire, while a heated oxygen sensor has three wires: signal, heater and ground.
Read the voltage from the sensor for about one minute with the engine running. You should get a fluctuating output voltage between 0.2 and 0.8 volts. with an average of about 0.5 volts. A voltage reading that remains low (close to 0.2 v) or high (close to 0.8) means the engine has a lean or high fuel ratio, respectively. Either the sensor is not responding, a fuel injector is leaking or clogged, or some other problem is affecting the air/fuel ratio. HOW DID THE FISHING GO?

Re: 98 ford taurus se 3.0 auto zone Manifold gasket p1151 02 switchbank sensor Sign In

I'm just going to add one small step to RTs procedure. Do everything he said and if bank 2 is lean (low voltage) you need to enrich the system with propane to tell if it's a bad sensors or if there is a lean condition keeping the 02 @ low voltage...

You need to use extreme care & caution doing this for obvious reasons.

If the voltage is low, you add propane and after a second or two the sensor should peg high and stay there with small movements but no crosscounts. The rest of the test requires a lab scope to measure switching time in milliseconds but for your purposes if the voltage low and stays low with propane enrichment, you have a bad sensor. If it pegs high you have a lean condition somewhere.....

Hey RT....What's up dude......long time no talk.....
