Im buying a 98 ford explorer sport 4x4, very cheap. problem is when you come to a stops, or sit and idle, it will stall out. Then you have to pump the gas pedal hard for it to start back up. This is even with a full tank of gas. The owner said he thinks its the exhaust, because it was cut off to replace somehing and not welded completely around. Someone please give me any ideas? Crazy

Just what was cut off to replace what with what in exhaust? Is it noisy?

If not running properly there should be codes or any "check engine" light on? Get codes read either way a post the results,

no, no check engine light. apparently they cut out the pipe from under the engine to the cat. they needed to replace something above the pipe and did it the wrong way. its not really noisy at all, and it runs fine while driven. but when you come to a stop or an idle ( stop light, stop sign, etc.) it stalls out and you really have to hold down the pedal to start it

The key now is pre purchase. If still interested I strongly suggest a full check out by a shop not affiliated with seller before you buy for all sorts of items throughout and check the title or find history of any damage/accidents.

If exhaust was damaged somehow a real shop/tech should have a clue if done properly or was more involved. That's expensive stuff and not running properly could have started to destroy catalytic converter.

Having to play with "gas pedal" or put to floor suggests it is flooding out.

If, if, if the price has attracted this to you beware that repairs seen or unseen can far defeat any bargain.

All the above but suggest seller make it right if you wish to pursue this one or look on for another and still have whatever vehicle checked out. That's perhaps $100 on you or more but well spent,

This isn't an exhaust problem. It could be a fuel pressure issue or something else but it needs to be checked out.

PS, when you pump the throttle on that car, all you are doing is exercising you foot. It does nothing at all.
