98 cavalier will crank but wont start	Sign In

Now I have been told by a lot of people the things it might be:

because a friend cut the original wire harness from the radio people said it might interfere with my ignition
crank sensor
fuel pump

The relay is good. The fuel pump hums when the key is in the on position. I tried starting fluid and it did the same thing. Some say they don't think its the fuel pump. and a fuel pump is extremely expensive so I don't want to replace it if I don't have to. Someone told me bout a fuel pump switch to reset it but I cant find it. It was not in the trunk. So I have no idea where it is if I even have one.

Any one have any ideas of what to try or what it could be and how do I know what it could be. It wont start so I cant take it to a shop or somewhere to have it looked at.

If someone thinks you can just go into a dash an chop up wires and not have a problem they should be rendered a lifetime passenger or pedestrian!

I'm not the stereo/sound system nut but know they make things called "interfaces" such that you don't need to cut a thing for a replacement aftermarket item for sound. Certainly check with a test light all the fuses inside and any underhood now.

Take the cut off original plug and solder each wire back where they belong covered in shrink wrap. Now if you can drive the thing go get the proper set up specific for the car and new system to plug it into and hope nothing more happened in the holocaust,

Amen Tom! To your guy who cut up the wires, and anyone else who reads this posting until the end of time, there is not even one of us professional techs with years of experience and shop information at our fingertips that would do that to our own car or anyone elses. You don't even have to go to a stereo shop and spend big money. You can get a wiring adapter from Wal-Mart in the car audio section for less than 10 bucks and its EASIER to install your deck using it anyway. Never ever cut up the factory wires for the stereo unless you wish to open Pandora's Box on your car! I've seen everything from crazy electrical problems right down to the car starting on fire and burning up because of this kind of thing.
