98 Nissan Sentra GXE Indicator light resetting not working

1998 Sentra GXE 1.6L
I have a 98 Nissan Sentra GXE when I hooked it up to a service engine soon reset device it didn't reset (leaving the service engine soon light on), what do I do next!! Please HELP 
After using the device to reset the indicator light shouldn't the service engine soon light shut off (even for a second) THEN come back on if there's still a problem?
Right now the light stays on all the time and appears immediately after turning the key and while starting the car. I can't get the service engine soon light to even blink! Does this make a difference in diagnosing the problem?

That means there's a code to be read not just reset to shut the light off. Some issue is noticed and you should want to know what and fix it,

I'm not familiar with whatever device you are using to shut the light off. With a scanner (code reader) you can reset codes when you are finished then there's a waiting time for car's computer to know all is ok.
Light on while cranking is just making sure the bulb works like some others that light while cranking. If light comes right back on there's a hard code stored and will come right back so codes need to be read to see what it has to say. Could be running fine and a wire to a sensor is disconnected or telling that it can't communicate to say all is well.
Many parts outlets will read codes for you. Why don't you want to know what info is stored? If you are trying to get an inspection in places that read the info it should know it was reset and not enough time yet to give an "all clear" message so you will fail the test.
Erasing a soft code may keep the CEL or SEL light off for a while but if there's something there and quite apparently there is it will come back on quickly - even right away.
This is OBDII as all cars model year 96 and up are. Read the code as if this problem is causing excessive emissions you could be ruining your catalytic converter - a bit pricey to not take care of what could be just a bad connection to something. Not everything is expensive to fix that it's watching.

The light comes on because there is a problem. Trying to erase the indicator doesn't make the problem go away. You need to read the code and resolve the issue before trying to put the light out.

I'm not sure what you are using but it seems like if it has the ability to erase codes, it should also be able to read them.
What code does your car have?
