I have a 1998 Jeep Wrangler that won't crank if it gets below freezing outside. Usually if it's about 5-10 degrees above freezing then it doesn't have a problem. I had the starter replaced a month ago and when it cranks (above freezing) it starts quickly without a problem. When I turn the key in the ignition, the lights don't dim (which are bright) in the car at all and it doesn't crank or make any type of whirring noise. The only thing that comes on is the air conditioning unit. No check engine light has come on. I also had the battery checked and it charges correctly and holds a charge. When I brought it into the mechanic, he replaced the starter and checked whatever else he thought may be creating a problem cranking the engine in the morning. If anyone could offer any help I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you!

Other Facts:
I live in a humid area (virginia).

Being from a tropical environment myself, and never seeing snow, i dont know how i can help.

All I can think of is the plunger in the solenoid may be too cold to fire. Is there a clicking when you try it, or nothing, or does it crank, but no start??

Let me know how you go.

No there isn't any clicking or anything, no noise. No crank. Unsure

I've been watching this and just a few thoughts of what you might do to isolate the problem. As described it seems like the starter motor does not get voltage at all to even make a noise at the temp of about 32F or 0,C when exposed to that for some time.

So this should be as the Doc said a problem with the solonoid that probably (not sure) is lubed lightly with like graphite so the plunger can move to make the contact there or the neutral safety switch has a problem with allowing current to pass thru it at the specific temp.

Couple things I would try: Put a jumper wire (fused is always best) clipped on the starter pos that would make it crank and leave the other end where you could have a test light in place or ready to see if power get there at all. If not then back the the soloniod where the ignition would give it 12v to energize the solonoid. If that did get power you kind of have to blame the solonoid but if the replacement starter included replacing the solonoid that would be odd.

2. Try (careful with what gets warmed) using a common hair blow dryer to warm up a suspect area and if that makes it work at least you have the item or the area pinned down.

If the moisture of humidity has a role and might as that would be consistant with the freezing point of water whereas oils don't really have a drastic behavoir change at that exact temp as water does. Anything get real wet with the history of the vehicle??

Just some thoughts/ideas,

T
