98 Ford Ranger // 3.0 Liter // Manual Trans // 80k Got in my ranger the other day and noticed lack of engine power, as well
as rough idle. Check engine light came on. Autozone diagnosed from
the computer as cyclinder 3 misfire. I replaced all the spark plugs,
cylinder 3's plug was pretty nasty looking, all others were fine. This
didn't fix it. Next I replaced the ignition wire from the coil pack to
the plug and that fixed it, for a few hours, then back to square one.
Should I just keep moving up and replace the coil pack at this point?
Thanks.

Yep, the coil is too weak. The new wire had lower resistance so it got by with less for a short period. Check the compression on that cylinder to be sure also. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Changing the coil pack did the trick. I went ahead and finished replacing out all the ignition wires and cleaned off plug3 again. Thanks for the help! By plug3 looking nasty, just real brown and gunked up looking, I figure because the cylinder wasn't firing.

Change out at least THAT plug if not all for exact replacement plugs. If somehow that plug was a cause not the total failure I wouldn't risk it - get it replaced, T

First thing I did was replaced all the plugs, I think I wasn't clear on that, when I said I cleaned it off, that was the new plug after I thought it was fixed. Replacing the Coil Pack was the real issue. Thanks. Its running better than ever now.

I hear you. You needed to clean that plug and even if new it would worry me. Probably if anything would have less resistance to spark or ground out now but if somehow that stresses the coil I'd want it out. Just me, T
