98 Ford Escort Wagon noise coming from engine when I start the engine Sign In

I can't believe this is happening! We are about to sell the car thought of fixing A/C, not.

But now when we start the car there is a loud noise like something spinning or turning and it's sounds like it hitting another metal part.

Prior to this we had noticed when we accelerated a clicking noise, click, click click....and as it goes back to idle it stopped.

We tried to find where the sound comes from and it seems to be in back of the engine where you put the motor oil in. But then it's like a vintuiliquist. You put your head to where you think you hear it and then it somewhere else, but it seems to be around the back we guess.
I'm thinking it's from the same clicking noise but much much louder.
Like two big pieces of metal hitting, clattering, eachother.
I could put it in gear (drive) but to scared to put on the gas.

Last night I took it for a spin. When driving the car you can barely hear the clicking.
We can hear it more when to hood is popped open. This happens with A/C off or on doesn't matter.

So, I turned off car. When I got home. Then after turning it off, in (Park) Position of course. Waited a few seconds and started it up and bam that loud noise.
It's like now the click is continuous but much louder. I'm too scared to drive it now.
It has 162,300 miles on it. Hoping it's not the engine. Otherwise, I wondering how much we'd get for auto wreckers!! It is such a nice car
well taken car of (I thought) inside and out, new tires...

Can anyone tell me what the possibilities can be.

Stressing out on car and possibility of no sale of car!
Dammmmmm!!
Pardon my french.

It's tough to describe a noise but here are some ideas -thoughts....

* Can you possibly rule out pulleys, alt, other belt driven things like even the timing belt?

* Generally worn out hard mechanical engine parts get better when engine is warmed up and symptoms may go away. The most common is probably crankshaft bearings and piston slap alone with valves ticking from be way off. That is usually described as a knocking sound like if you change your own oil you hear that for a second.

* If you've cared for this car the miles alone shouldn't have killed it. Sometimes an oil pump will fail and it's game over for that engine.

* Sometimes the heat shields of cat converters or a rusted clamp can make funny noises.

Hope it's just some easy pulley or something, good luck, T

In addition to the usual suspects Tom listed, you might also check the flexplate-to-crankshaft and flexplate-to-torque converter bolts.

My escort (94) also makes a load vibration sound which I presumed was a valve train death rumble but it seems instead to be the altenator. As it continued to operate (electrically) OK I have not replaced it, but the sound does make one ill at ease.

I must seriously amend my previous post. That loud rumble that I thought was coming from the alternator was coming from right next door. The camshaft (timing) belt was unravelling and bits peeling off were striking the inside of the plastic cover right next to the alternator. I didnt catch it and ended up with F.O.R.D. syndrome (Found on Road Dead) See the Escort sudden death string. Better check that timing belt, it could be coming apart and making the noise that has you worried. My Escort now has its belt replaced and the rumble is gone.

Well, I want to thank everyone for the advice that was given.
Though we didn't want to put money into the ford anymore.
Ended up buying a new car!! 2005 Nissan Ultima
I hope it's going to be a good and lasting car!
We ended up donating it to charity and got a 2000.00 tax write off.
Thanks to a neighbor who told us about donating cars.

Keep up the good advise. Cool

If not a real engine problem - could it be and exhaust noise? Those are more apt to appear or be heard when cold. Good luck, still could be real trouble, - T
