My '98 was running fine until it was left with the headlights on, draining the battery completely (even the clock on the radio had to be reset) . Jumped it to start it; it runs but after warm-up the idle speed drops to about 200 rpm and it stalls every time I stop. Could this be related to the battery dying? Some effect on the ignition control module? JimC

It may be related to the battery, worse yet it may be because the alternator isn't charging... but lets not get carried away yet. Is this a new battery or a replacement in the last two years or so? I would recharge the battery and then see what happens. Its possible that it just needs a good recharging. And this would stop the idle drop. If you have a charger then you could do this, otherwise you could go to a repair shop or a pep boys type of place and they might charge you about $20 to charge the battery and test the system. This might be worth it since they could tell you if the alternator is still producing the power to the car. Hope this helps.

Just a note on Batteries. If completely discharged (it was said that even the clock needed resetting) it's real hard on the alternator to charge it up and can kill the alternator. Also - batteries don't usually age well. They really lose dependability after 3 or 4 years. They are marked as to how old they are - most in code with #s and letters. Usually A=January,and a # for the year. Manufacturer can help you if confusing. If you know it's origianal it's toast now. As "Carjunky" said - you need to know that all is well with the battery and charging system. It could effect engine controls. I think this needs to be known before going further if needed. Good luck,
