98 Cheverolet Cavalier intermitant no start with CEL Sign In

98 Cheverolet Cavalier 2.2L 173,000miles started having trouble starting 3 months ago. When I turn the key the car acts like it is going to turn over and then pauses (no sound for 2 seconds) then continues and starts fine. I thought it might be the starter, but did not replace right away b/c this was only an intermitant problem once or twice a week and only happened when engine had been sitting 8 hours or more. After about a month, the pauses increased to 3 pauses before car would start. Still only happening once or twice a week. When the three pauses started it triggered the Check Engine Light. I had the codes ran and 0335 and 0342 came back for the camshaft position sensor and crankshaft position sensor. When codes were tested, it cleared the CEL and the CEL did not come back on for another week (when the pauses occured during start). Had the codes tested again and same codes came up. The light did not come back on for another week. Then after a few starts, the CEL turned itself off and stayed off for several days. When the codes came back on I replaced both the Crankshaft Position Sensor and Camshaft Position sensor. Car did fine for a couple days, then the CEL began coming on. Now it comes on and stays on for a day or two, goes off, and then comes back on a day or two later. The time it takes for the car to crank and catch on is getting longer and twice now the car has only cranked, but not actually started. I turn the key off and then starts fine. The hard/slow starts are getting more frequent pretty much every day. I have been fortunate that the car has always started by the 2nd try, but do not want to push my luck.

The spark plugs were replaced 2 years ago. I have had the intake system cleaned. Just had an oil change with an MOA additive. Tested the battery and alternator and they are both fine and less than 2 years old.

I have heard that if the CEL is coming on then the problem is not the starter because the starter is part of a different system. Is there a chance the starter going bad could be interupting the electrical current, which trips the sensors to tell the CEL something is wrong?

I have also read that hard starts could be caused by flywheel damage. Is there a way to know if the flywheel is damaged without taking it out of the engine?

Thanks for any help you can pass my way. If it is the starter I know this is a pretty simple repair, but before I go and sink another $100 into a part (like I did with the crank and cam shaft sensors) I want to find some support for trying the part.
