need help determining what engines, years, size are compatible with a 97 silverado 1/2 ton 4x4, that has a blown 5.0. vortec engine... getting alot of mixed opinions on this...what years i can and can not use for an engine...and sizes..???? can i go down to a 4.3, or up to a 5.3,- 5.7 ??? and how much work is involved, or price

That's pretty simple. You can use a 5.0 Vortec and nothing else. When you call the junkyard, they can check the interchange book and tell you which years will work. The management system in your truck is engineered to run one engine and one engine only, not to mention it would be against federal law to modify the engine it came with.
