in my 97 mustang v6 3.8L 5 speed manual transmission while i am driving my car freqently putts as if i am tapping on my break but really im pushing the gas if i try and speed up or accelerate through the hold back to rapidly the car will back fire and feeling of tapping breaks becomes more firm and frequent keep in mind the feeling like tapping isnt as if the breaks were grinding but like the engine is loseing power. my check engine light came on reading mis fire in cylinder 3 i was told this means it could be a variety of things includeing as small as sparkplugs and as seriouse and a timeing belt

Does this do this all the time or does it run good for a bit then act up? Does it stall? Does it do this right away when you start it or does it have to warm up first before it will act up? When was the last tuneup done and how many miles are on the car?

Try unplugging the MAF and see if the problem goes away. This will set a code that you will have to clear later but it may prove something. They had a lot of problems with MAFs around that year.
