'97 Express Van need to give it a little gas Sign In

My 1997 Chevy Express van (5.7L, 146000 Miles) starts fine when cold (as in, the engine has been off a while), but when I restart it, it needs a little gas (tap the accelerator) to get going again. The "check engine light" is not on. This problem just started about 2 weeks ago.

turz; When an engine is cold, it requires a rich air/fuel mixture. This is initially controlled by the computer via the CTS (coolant temp. sensor). As the engine warms, the mixture leans. When the engine is warm, a rich mixture will cause it to flood. By 'tapping' the accelerator, you are actually giving it more air....not fuel, and thereby leaning a rich condition.
This 'sounds' like what is going on. Of course there are other reasons, as well. To check the CTS, you'll need a scanner that can see live data. It can be tested with an ohmmeter by reading resistance at varying temps. The Vortec motors are also known for fuel feed lines leaking fuel into the intake manifold. Pull the oil dipstick and check for fuel smell in the oil. A gas analyzer would be very helpful for checking for fuel in the crankcase and excessive CO/HC in the exhaust. Most any shop can do these tests for you. Good luck.

Thanks, I'll have that checked out. OK, I didn't smell gas on the dipstick, that's probably a good thing. I see online, that the CTS is relatively a cheap part, $14, but the location info was unclear, is the sensor in the radiator or in the intake manifold?

The CTS MIGHT be on the intake manifold thermostat housing but if not...it should be located on the engine block underneath one of the heads or in the head.

Lots of good advise going on.....

I just add one quick one.....While you're in there you might want to clean the throttle body as well if it hasn't been cleaned in a while. Those can get "coked" up and give you some running problems as well. Just use some throttle body cleaner & a little brush. You can shoot some down the throat while it's running, this may set a code but it just needs to be cleared afterwards......

I had the CTS replaced, it helped somewhat. The van starts fine when cold and restarts ok when completely warmed up, it's the time in-between when the temp is warming up that i still have to give it a "little gas". I do not smell gas on the dipstick. I'll try the throttle body cleaner.
