'97 Dakota won't start/OBD II not "talking" Sign In

Yesterday the vehicle worked fine, this morning it would not start. I can crank on it all day (or until the battery or starter give out), so lots of power. Seems initially to be a fuel related problem. I believe I can hear the fuel pump and relay come on, when putting key initially on.

I then decided to check the obd II codes. I cannot get it to "talk" to the engine computer - i get a loink error each time i try to run the scan test. (btw, i did use it lately on the dakota and it scanned fine and i also checked the scanner on another vehicle to verify it's operation and it works fine). Rule out a problem diagnostic tool.

If anyone can point me in a direction to check out this problem, I'd very much appreciate that. I have lots of "juice", i potentially seem to have a communication related problem with the onboard computer and who knows what else.

help,

link error indicates wireing problem between ALDL and computer or a bad computer.

turn signal problem sounds like a possible short in left side turn signal wiring...left side bulb could be bad - front or rear. the elements sometimes ground themselves and cause all kinds of weird problems. could be a switch problem but since you replaced the flasher and things worked for a bit it seems you have a "short circuit" or "intermittently open circuit" problem in the left side wires.

both problems will require investigating wiring.... not exactly a job for the unexperienced. BUT, good places to check for faulty wires are connectors, places where wires go through bulkheads, places where wires are constantly "flexed"(between door and post or etc), or anywhere where the wires have been exposed or work has been done in the recent past.
good luck, rick

Update Sat 26 July:

checked voltages coming into the PCM (C1): the hot wire (12v) at pin 22 and the (5v feed) to pin 2 were good. There is NO evidence that anything got "fried" or was hot at any of the three plug connectors (C1, C2, C22) or at either harnass. Removed the MAP connector and checked that end out, all seemd to be good.

Again, it definitely sounds like the fuel pump is working. We looked for spark and it is there, ALTHOUGH, it did seem rather lacklustre, if I could use that term. The output seemed to be a little low, but there is a spark there at the plug.

However, I still cannot "talk" to the computer using the OBD II (link error), so regardless of anything else, it would appear that I have a computer (or PCM) related fault. Can anyone advise here ?

cheers,
Steve

If the computer can't communicate with the scanner....there's no-way around that, its gonna have to be replaced, besides that it wouldn't pass inspection either cause of that.

For as the computer goes it will have to be replaced. The van turn signal problem, I would be considering replacing the multifunction switch as you suggested, but I would check the contacts in the steering wheel first before buying the part. Also check the bulbs for good connections too.

Don't take this wrong, but are all the fuses good? Possibly there is a fuse blown causing the PCM not to communicate. I saw where you checked a copuple of the power inputs, but did not menyion checking fuses. Just a thought.

Dave

I have checked ALL the fuses (one of the first things I did) and even the relays. Swapped many of them out and exchanged places (most sre similar part numbers)

before I go and get another PCM, is there anything else I can do ?

one fellow told me the folllowing:
I would check the obd-II pins for continuity to the distant end.
If that checks out, then it's most likely the PCM having issues.
If can borrow another gen II dakota/ram/durango V6 PCM to swap in for testing I'd try that.
You could also tow the vehicle to a shop with a more advanced scan tool.

Link Error Sign In

The Dakatoa is back online, turns out the Ignition Coil Assy was faulty.

However, I still cannot use the OBD II to run a scan. I get a Link Error when trying to check fault codes. I know I have a PO 783 transmission code flagged.

Can anyone advise on why I cannot use the OBD II now ?

Re: Link Error Sign In

Just a suggestion, you are getting power most likely through your OBDII connector, But you might have some dirty data pins?? A pencil eraser does wonders!!!
