Hi! So new to auto replair, just replaced starter (different issue) I noticed the serpentine belt looked wobbly (it was making lovely noises too) So quick research thought maybe A/C issue. I tried to turn Ac off (Oops) it was already off and when I turned it on the belt snapped. (oh so fun) So how do I know if the compressor is bad verses ? What else could if be/ I do rather than replace compressor?? What do I have to do/ look for? can I replace my compressor myself? I have a 96 mercury sable, around 120,000

Check each pulley that it spins smoothly and has no side to side rocking movement. When you check the A/C pulley, there is an outer, freewheeling pulley and a center part that actually turns the compressor. Make sure you can turn both parts. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
