96 Chevy Cavalier, automatic transmission, don't know engine size. About a month ago, my car died on the road - I felt it losing power, it stopped taking gas and just stopped running. I couldn't restart it - the starter worked but it wouldn't turn over. Had it towed - it started fine the next day, mechanic checked everything and couldn't find anything wrong - battery, alternator, fuel line all fine. Continued to drive it (took a long trip - 200+ miles) with no problems. Yesterday the same thing happened. I was driving at moderate speed (looking for a parking spot in the nabe) & suddenly it stopped taking gas, lost power, and stopped moving. Again, starter worked but it didn't turn over. Had it towed to another garage. This mechanic tells me it needs a new head assembly or (new cylinder heads? - I forget exactly what he said)... for a grand total of $1700. Does this diagnosis sound right? If so, does the price seem right?

It's your car and you better know what engine you have! What if anything happened on the 200 mile trip and even before that? Fluids.... are they full? Did it run hot for a long time?

If you have a problem with a head it will usually still run poorly and they can frequently be redone to be right again. It's not consistant with your stated problems and if a timing chain or belt jumped it could cause severe engine damage and some will jump and jump back but more often it's a surprise and you are stuck.

Get a diagnosis that details why this could be the problem. I'm not there but this is more like a fuel delivery problem,

T
