I am having problems with my wife's '95 Hyundai Accent temperature gauge.

Why does the temperature gauge peg out when I start the car, but have plenty of coolant/antifreeze in the radiator and reserve tank?

I even had the cap off and accelerated the engine, and the level didn't drop after running the car for a few minutes.

What do I need to do or what do you think the problem is?

Are you suggesting that it reads overheated right off the start from cold engine? That would be a guage - sender issue.

If it can IYO really be hot then we need to diag that. Which is happening?

You are correct. When the engine is cold and I start the car, the temperature gauge goes up 100% as if it were overheating.

The radiator is full of antifreeze/coolant, and the resevoir even has some in it as well.

I accelerate the engine and the temperature gauge flutters down, but then still goes back up. I'm guessing its a sensor, or could something be dirty?

This is likely a sender problem, wire problem or dirty connection as you said.

For the life of me I couldn't find exactly where to look for it as there should be a sensor for computer, one for gauge and another for making the cooling fan(s) come on.

Frequently they are at or near the thermostat which is at the engine end of the upper radiator hose. May look like this....

Not certain on that?

I'm full of I dunnos today - If you unplugged it and gauge dropped, or changed that's the suspect one. Don't leave it like that - just a test.

Till you find this problem if it take some time ----- if you run the heater and it goes cold on you, you are probably overheating for real - that's about the only way I can think of for now to tell engine temp without a guage or warning light,
