94toyota camry v6 HELP Sign In

hi, im having some trouble with my car. few days ago i noticed my car starting to knock it felt like the gas would just give out and come right back. at first when the knock would occur the car would still drive but now when i start it, it idles for a min then dies. after it dies it will not start for some time. so i went to a friends house to try and get some help. we ended up just cleaning the fuel filter the best we can due to my current budget. we poured gas in it, shook it, taped it a little then poured it out the color was a choclate color pretty nasty. we did that several times. when we put it back in the car it ran fine for a day but then the knock + car dieing occured again. so then we thought maybe the battery cables needed to be replaced so we put new cables on. the old positive cable was so rusty and looked burnt where it connects to the motor area. that still didnt fix the problem. so to make sure the fuel filter was pumping gas through we took the bolt off the top and tried to start it to see if gas was pumping, the gas was pumping. this is where im lost we are not sure wut else to do. my friend told me to get a diagnosis, he said maybe its an electrical problem something to do with the coils maybe. but in order to get a diagnosis the check engine light has to be on??? its not in my car. if u have any insight on other things i could check or change please help me. thank you for ur time.

Just curious, but how can you afford the gas and insurance to drive your car if you don't have the money to buy a $15 fuel filter?

Re: 94toyota camry v6 HELP Sign In

the reason i didnt buy one yet because im unemployed and my brother recently got a job. ive been taking him to work with my umemployment check(which isnt much) till he gets paid. so all my money is in the gas tank. i have 3 kids its rough im sorry if u dont understand. right now im waiting for my next check. next time ill explain my finances better. i dont have car insurance either until i can afford it. which my brother plans to help with after he gets his first check. i cant even take my car to a mechanic because i dont have the money. this is why i was looking for some help from some of u guys. now that ive explained my "current budget" would u narrow it down to the fuel filter? if so ill be getting a new one as soon as i get some more money.

also is the fuel pump suppose to make noise when u turn the key? my previous vehicle (chevy blazer) made a pumping noise when i barley turned the key. with the toyota it doesnt. but when u crank it with the bolt loose on the fuel filter gas pumps out.

No, some of them don't engage until you start cranking.

Re: 94toyota camry v6 HELP Sign In

Sorry that your going through a rough time. With 3 kids to shelter and feed and now a sick car, you have your hands full. We can give you advice, but there has to be some sort of feed back. To collect the feedback, you'll have to run some tests. You'll probably need some special equipment. Unless you know someone that has a fuel pressure gauge with adapters, multimeter, test lamp, and various hand tools that you can borrow, your going to have to buy or rent those things. Its not like on TV where McGuyver gets the car running with a stick of bubble gum and a pencil eraser.

One test that should be performed is checking fuel pressure. You can't do that with your finger or by watching fuel squirt out a hose. You need a fuel pressure gauge and it has to be connected to the fuel system to see pressure. You also need to know how much fuel the pump is capable of moving within a certain period of time to determine if you have some sort of restriction or a pump that is failing.

Washing or trying to clean a paper fuel filter is like putting a paper towel in a washing machine. You'll get holes and rips in the filter element banging it on the ground. Now you have trash that is able to get into your fuel injectors causing even more trouble.

Re: 94toyota camry v6 HELP Sign In

okay i decided to call some family for help and got some money wired. so i went to napa and bought a new fuel filter and air filter. i changed both of them. no luck :( car still wont start. after reading ur post about needing fuel pressure checked i called the local mechanic in town he wants 50bucks to check the fuel pressure. he wont be able to come over till tomorrow. is there anything else i need checked besides fuel pressure? if there is no check engine light on should i get a diagnosis? is there any cleaning solutions i should try? also when i changed the air filter i took the hose apart to see if it was clogged in there. i pulled the throttle and the flap opened up, it didn't look clogged but its kinda black and oily inside. should i get some cleaner for that?

Re: 94toyota camry v6 HELP Sign In

the only reason i did that to the fuel filter was cuz the day my car broke down my brother had to be at work, and i had no money. im not a mechanic so we asked a friend. he told me he used to do that for his truck when he was short on money. he told me it would be okay but a temporary fix and that i would still need to buy a new one. i wish i would have known sooner that it is very bad to do that. i just wanted to get my brother to work on time. i do appreciate the help u guys provide. i will try and get u guys some more info tomorrow.

hmm i was looking online for a fuel pressure gauage , muiltimeter, and test lamp and it looks like i could get all 3 for around the same price for the local mechanic to come out and check the fuel pressure. u mentioned some various hand tools and adapters. which ones do u think i need. i may just go and buy that stuff.id like to do as much of the work i can myself to save as much money as possible.

Don't forget this is gasoline you're messin with. Removing a bolt and watchin it pump freely can be very dangerous. Have the tech bring his scan tool when he comes to check the fuel pressure. $50 bucks is really reasonable for someone to come out and check fuel pressure. The ck engine light doesn't have to be on to to scan test or show fault codes.
