i was driving my car with half a tank of gas still in it, all of a sudden it started slowing down like the gas wasnt getting to the engine, and the car died. i tried to start it and the engine cranks but will not turn over. the fuel pump makes a sound, and the fuel filter was replaced by a friend of mine after this happened. i tried having my mom jump it to make sure the battery wasnt going retarded but that was unsuccessful as well. i need to get this fixed, i have close to no money at all and only have 7 days to do this in. please someone help me!!!Frown

Gotta find out if it has spark and fuel. Try some starting fluid in air intake - if it reacts to that there is still a fuel problem. Can you check for spark at the plugs?

Careful with trying too much as that's hard on the starter - let it cool down and don't overdo that cranking to no avail or you'll just need a starter too.

Even if fuel filter was the problem it takes a while for air to purge out of lines. Keep the battery up to charge as best you can with charger or just leave it jumped for a while with a donor car for now,

Tom

how do i check for spark? where is the air intake? im sorry i am totally lost when it comes to actually working on the car myself....should i keep trying to start it every once in a while to see if the air has purged out of the lines? how do i test the battery for a power reading? and what should it read?

sorry so many questions, it is just that the car is sitting in front of my house and i dont really know anyone to come look at it and fix it for me so i will probably have to do it myself...

Thank you for helping me...

I think you are going to need some help. You said you can hear the fuel pump so that's fair to say fuel pump probably isn't it. We still don't know though at all. If you know how to replace the air filter you could go there and spray some starting fluid - even some household WD-40 towards the intake of the engine - reassable the air cleaner and don't get WD-40 or anything on the filter and try it again. Don't overdo it or it will drain down the battery. If it cranks at normal speed it's ok for a couple tests and then you may need to jump it again for even testing anything.

Basically, I'll suggest you don't let engine crank for more than 10 seconds - let it rest a whole minute and you can try again, rest it again, try again and that's it. Don't cause more trouble by trying if it isn't working.

You could test for spark by taking a plug wire off at the plug and gently inserting a screwdriver in the wire and hold the metal of the shaft close to ground metal of the engine. A short try with cranking it should show a spark. HEY! YOU CAN GET A STARTLING SHOCK DOING THAT AND STILL NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. GET SOME HELP. IT ISN'T WORTH ME TRYING TO DESCRIBE ALL THE WAYS TO TEST FOR SPARK AND I DOUBT YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL TOOLS FOR THAT. Even that test could be harmful if the wrong peice of metal was used or when cranking you had your hands or clothing in the way of something moving.

Testing for spark and fuel helps narrow down which is the problem but the test doesn't fix it. We can't even guess what else to try after that is known.

Without equipment you could just leave jumper cables hooked up for 10 minutes with a donor car that's running should keep the battery up to par and rule it out for the moment. Even jump starting an
engine requires you to know how to properly hook it up which is discussed in the owner's manuals of most vehicles.

If these things are confusing you you simply need help and may anyway. If you have a motor club they might be able to do a quick diagnosis for you at location. If you have some gasoline I would add some just to rule out a mistaken reading from the gas gauge.

I don't know much else to tell you that can help with no money to fix an unknown right now. We don't know. This could be an expensive problem and right now it's just trying to rule out some simple things that could be a problem or it will need to go in for diagnosis and repair with what I see.

When attempting anything with this if in doubt about how to test or do anything then DON'T. It isn't worth getting hurt over or making a problem worse,

T
