Ok so its a junker and the "Service Engine" light has been on for several years. Put new plugs & air filter in this summer. I think I set a world record on plug life. They had 100K on them and were burned out to 100 thousanths. Thermoststat is permantly stuck in the open position. Oh yeah, has EFI fuel injection & abs brakes. With the cold weather of late, old faithfull has started dogging out real bad, will hardly take a moderate hill. It starts & and runs ok but the minute you put the throttle down a bit it just dogs down as if you had *let UP* on it. But strangely if you floor it *ALL* the way down it will rev up and go -- but still with less power than it should have. I'm like stranded in the woods and about to get fired for not getting to work. "Failure is not an option."

Gee, what a surprise. You've maintained it so well. Why would it ever fail? You think maybe the check engine light could be something important? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

No, I thought that the "Check Engine" light was an indication that the dealer was low on money and need more repair business. But seriously I asked 20 different people what that light was for and half said they had no idea, and the other half said don't worry about it. And we both know that putting black tape over it ain't gonna fix the engine.

Who the hell were you asking? Even the local hairdresser probably knows what the light is for. The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired. Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem.

Last year I paid a guy 50 bucks to hook his computer code checker up to it and he said he couldn't fine anything wrong with it. Of course the light was on then too and the plugs were probablely out to 95 thou by then too. So much for my former 50 aye? Oh and the air filter was clogged too, I figured that one out for my self the last time my car stopped running.

If you could give us some test info, we might be able to help you track this down. I have just seen a long list of abuse the car has gone thru which really kinda makes me cringe. Most of the stuff I'm sure your aware of the possible problems, with the T stat, proper engine temp is critical for performance and long life, some people are unaware of this & run without one because they have the mistaken idea it runs cooler... I'm guessing most of the stuff you are talking about you're kidding, being a smartazz about which I can appreciate cuz that's my style as well... On the off chance you did talk to all those people and that is a straight up answer, then you need to get a different source for you auto info.. On this one we would have to start off with what codes are there, a look at a datastream would probably shed a lot of useful info and the basics as well, fuel pressure, check the battery, fuse, etc. Get us some useful info and we can help. If you are just looking for a "part" to try, I'm personally unaware of any common failure patterns for this problem so I'm not going to waste your money by guessing. I'm sure there are some other places that would be willing to give it a shot and in all seriousness now....I honestly hope they are right the 1st or 2nd times because guessing can get very expensive....
