94 Nissan Ultima timing chain

My 94 Ultima needs a timing chain. I've been told that if the motor is an interference/non-interference motor (one or the other) that the motor was probably ruined. I have a friend that has all the tools and is willing to help me fix it for the cost of the parts, but I'd hate to spend two days working on it if the motor is already shot. Any info would be appreciated.
