1994 Jeep Cherokee 4.0
180K miles

About 7 months ago my Jeep started dying randomly, both while idling or driving at any speed. Generally it would start right back up, or at least after a few minutes. The fuel filter was replaced at that point - I tried to blow air through it like a trumpet but it was completely clogged. The problem remained. a few weeks later the fuel pump was replaced. This seemed to do the trick and for about 3 months the Jeep was fine. Then all of the sudden the stalling/dying returned. The car also will occasionally miss/jerk/buck like a bronco. At highway speeds it feels like hitting a speed bump, and it's concerning, at the very least. This usually is an indication that it's going to die very soon.

Anyway, with fuel filter and fuel pump replaced, the problem has returned. I have a theory, however. I rarely keep more than half a tank of gas in the car, usually about a quarter tank. Not smart, I know, but it's what I can afford. My theory is that there's rust in the fuel line, and in spite of the new filter & pump, it's still affecting things. The other day I completely filled the tank with gas, and added 2 bottles of fuel additive.

If I stay on top of it and keep the tank full, keep putting in fuel additive, and maybe replace the filter again, would things improve?

Your not going to know anything without some testing first while the problem is present. As far as rust in the system, you'll have to remove the filter and pout it into a clear container to see if that is the case. You will also have to monitor the fuel pressure during the problem to see if it remains at spec.

Another common part to cause a problem like that is the crank sensor but you still need to test for spark and injector pulse during the problem and not just throw parts at it.

I do know that the fuel pressure is OK; we stuck a gauge on and tested it a couple of times. I'll look into the other stuff. Thanks.

You confirmed that fuel pressure while the problem was present right?

Well, when the problem's present, there's no fuel pressure at all because the car's dead. But unless and until that happens, the car runs fine and the fuel pressure's in the normal range. Usually starts up fine, goes a bit (a few miles), dies. Starts up again (usually), goes a bit, dies again.

Just this afternoon, I sat in a Wal Mart parking lot and let it idle for about 10 minutes with no problems, but at soon as I pulled out on to the highway, kaput. Started right back up, though, and got me home (3 miles). It pretty much does this every day now.

That's not telling you a thing. Of course the fuel pressure is good when the problem isn't present. You have to be observing the fuel pressure at the time the car is acting up.

If there isn't any pressure on the gauge, then that's your problem. That system should pressure up for 2 seconds with the key on or get pressure while cranking (in the 30 psi range). To confirm spray some carb clean down the throttle body if it starts & dies then its a fuel problem.
