94 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't start when cold Sign In

1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't start when the temp drops below 30ish. It will turn over but has no spark. When you turn the key to "on" the check engine light takes up to 1/2 hour to come on. Once that light comes on, it will start and run great. It just won't start until that light comes on. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Only paid $500 bucks and it is in perfect shape. Really need to get it going. 4.0L 221,000 miles

Just a wild guess: Jeeps + Chryslers can have a mind of their own sometimes. Get codes if you can when you can get it going.

What I was thinking is bulb check mode (lots of them will light up with a stalled engine or just key on, engine off KOEO) and while cranking. If the filament in that bulb has an attitude it might be the issue - as said a guess. Folks would take the bulbs out sometimes and some vehicles didn't like that. When off when it should be on, does bumping dash make it flicker or anything as a clue?

No, bumping the dash doesn't help. It just takes a while for the light to come on. Other people have told me to check for shorts or bad grounds. When it is warm the light comes on right away. Starts up and runs like a brand new engine. Only have problems when it is cold (below 35).

One more suggestion along the same lines.

Can you communicate with the PCM when the problem is happening? If not, warm the PCM (hair dry will work) and see if the helps wake it up..........
