'94 Grand Am, Trouble on cold-start

1994 Grand Am SE, 6 cyl. Sat for about a year. Replaced battery and it started right up with no difficulty. Prior to replacement, could not start even with a jump. Drove about four to six blocks to make sure operational. Got permit from DMV for smog purposes and drove in for smog check--no oil change, no fluid check, just drove in as was--about 60 miles (mostly freeway) with stops. Ran (much to my surprise) beautifully. Passed smog (even more to my surprise). Ran beautifully on the way back. Stopped at a friend's house and let sit for an hour or two. Mildly difficult to start as if it had bad fuel (missing on random cyl.'s while cranking, sputtering/running rough for about 15 seconds after start), then ran fine to next destination. Parked at next destination for three or four hours, and then could not start. Finally got it started, kept having to rev it to keep it from dying. Ran like "lawnmower" (rough, smelled like a two stroke), then it cleared up once it warmed up and ran smooth. Does the same thing now: When cold, I have to crank it repeatedly for about five minutes until it warms up enough that it will run, and once it runs and heats up there is no detectable problem. ??? I have checked the spark plug wires and connections I can get to, the distributor connections, and the intake. I've put more fuel in it since then, same behavior. Anyone out there know what is going on here?

The 3.1 L has trouble if the fuel injectors are dirty or gone bad. Spray starting fluid in the intake. does it run well for a few seconds? check the ohms of the injectors. I have had this problem so much I keep extra injectors around. Also I know someone else with a similar problem - they are convinced it is the timing belt..

Thanks, I didn't reply sooner because I had to test this. I started running Chevron through it--only Chevron--and now it doesn't have the problem. It must be a clogged/clogging injector, I'm just glad I don't have to pull anything right. I'll probably run some fuel system cleaner through it when I get a chance and see if it will run on other gasoline at that point. Thanks for the help.
