94 Ford Mustang engine popping

Hey guys,
I've been noticing some performance issues in my '94 Ford Mustang the last few weeks. It's become gradually worse. By late last week on my drive home from work it sounded like a baseball card in a bike wheel. I did a bit of reading online and someone said it could just be bad oil, etc and that an oil change may be enough to do the trick. I got the oil change today, but as I was heading there and as I was driving back, the noises were worse. The baseball card in the spokes "clicking" sound was still there, but there are now occasional popping sounds as well. It almost sounds like small backfires coming from my engine.
Does anyone have an idea of what could be happening here? If so, any idea what it will cost me?

bigmad; Does the noise go away if you pop it into neutral while you are moving? Need to know if it is engine or drivetrain?

my guess sinces its gettting louder over time would be an exhaust leak. a section or flange of your exhaust pipe probably rusted through and as the exhaust flow makes the hole bigger it gets louder.
