my truck will turn over and even start but then will shut off like the key was turned off. I found that Some times I will turn the key on and off 3 or 4 times it will start and stay running but not always. Once it starts to run I can turn it off and on without any problems but after sitting for a while I have to do the process again... I have used seafoam, replaced the fuel filter and air filter but not sure if it is an electrical or fuel problem..any help is much appreciated Rick.

The first thing to test is the fuel pressure. We need to watch the pressure using a gauge to determine what pressure it's maintaining during this problem. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Sounds more likley an ignition switch.Try and hold the key in the start position and when the engine starts back off just a hair to alow the starter to disengage. this may allow the engine to stay running until you let go of the key. Try it a few times to see if you can be consistant with it. If you can keep the engine running, then you will need to replace the ignition switch. Not the lock cyl. but the ignition switch.

Thank you for your input.. Sorry it took me so long to reply just a little lost in my little world... any ways I tried this and it didn't seem to make a difference... I am still able to turn it on and off without starting it after I hear the pump click at the carb. I do this about 3 or 4 times and it will start but most of the time it will ide like if the fuel is not there. I have also tried to start without "priming" and it just turns over and over.... and after 3 times of start up it usually stays running and if I drive a bit and shut it off for a couple minutes and try it again it will start. Don't have anything to test the fuel pressure as suggested by the other post but I am leaning that way.... Thanks again... all of you are awesome for helping those auto hackers like myself...

I just wanted to thank you for your help. I am leaning toward it being the fuel pump... I will let you all know when I get my head out and get to it... Thanks again guys...

Rick; This is a low pressure system. A fuel pressure guage would be very helpful in diagnosing the problem. You could probably rent one from AutoZone. The symptoms you describe sound like the pressure is being bled off after shutdown. This could be from a faulty check valve in the pump, or a leaky injector. Or, other things. The fuel pumps are not cheap and a real pain to replace (in the fuel tank), so you want to be sure what's wrong before you start replacing things. Loren SW Washington
