My 1994 V-6 XLE gold edition Camery is using twice as much gas, or more, since the water pump was replaced. It used a little under a quarter of a tank to go 7 or 8 miles today. Before, it was close to thirty miles a gallon. Other than that it runs perfectly. All I have done is change the air filter. I have new spark plugs but feel it may be more serious than that. There doesn't appear to be any leaks. What can it be? Thanks Chandra

When the water pump went out did it run hot? If so, did it run hot for very long?
does it smoke? How bad? Oh, and is its driveability, aside from the bad Blush gas problem, worse than pre-pump replacement condition?

Azrael,
Thanks for your reply. My car did over heat a couple of times. I was able to pull over until it cooled down and one time I added water. It doesnt smoke and it sounds and runs great. One friend said if the timing belt wasnt put on right it could cause that but the machanic said the computer sets it, and it runs smooth.
Thanks, Chandra

If this is right away after the water pump job it could have used some gas just letting it warm up and cool down a couple times just testing it out with the repair. Take real MPG readings starting from a full tank and measured miles till full again. It might just be the gas used in getting the job done,

I will check the MPG. It has been about a month since it was worked on and may be getting worse. Today I picked my friend up from the train I had a quarter of a tank of gas when I left my house and when I got to the train staion six miles away it was on empty. Have you ever heard anything like that? Thanks Tom for replying.

Two things off the top of my head could cause considerable fuel loss, at the rate you are talking about I don't know if it is being consumed, and those are cracked manifold gasket (not as likely) or a leak in the lines. While If it is the manifold gasket, again not as likely considering the amount of fuel you are loosing, your oil may smell of gas. If it were to be a leak it may be primarily leaking while in operation when the fuel pump is active causing blowout while on the road. Either way having your fuel system checked under pressure (pressure check) might just lead you to your problem. I am not going to abandon the thought just yet for I have a couple of resources I need to consult, it may however take a day or so.
