Before you do an engine swap, make sure that lifter didn't bleed down. If it collapsed, it will not move and will make that tapping noise you described.

Good one Steve. That's a real possibility. Should be able to test for that with just the valve cover off, T

im not doing and engine swap, im replacing the camshaft, the last lobe on the cam, which is the #5 cylinder's exhaust lobe, is round, there is no lift to it, its ground smooth. the lifter i swapped with another and its the same result, so i pinpointed it to the camshaft and something foreign in there caused it...which makes sence why it would run good for a few days then not. thanks guys.

There might be a lubrication problem with that and a new camshaft won't fix it for long if so. If there's a sludge problem going on with this engine it's trouble big time and you have to judge that, T

oil came up all the rods and lifters and ran down the rockers onto the heads. so i know the oil is getting there.

Re: 93 lumina 3.1L, puzzled Sign In

if you're planning on replacing the cam yourself, a couple things i would check before you put the new one in.
since you said the lobe was ground off, there is a reason for that and i would check to see why, i'd have to go with something in the lubrication i.e. collapsed lifter. i think you also said it overheated? oil does not do well at temps above the normal operating range of the vehicle. hot oil=thin oil, thin oil=reduced lubrication. (worked at a instant oil change place, and i've seen it all)

check the cam bearings. make sure there are no scratches, gouges, or other marks on them, some of the metal shavings could have gotten in there. and it's possible that one or more of them could be warped. the lobe being ground down would unbalance the camshaft and who knows what damage that might cause. and if at all possible, before you put the cam in, check to make sure oil is getting to the cam bearings(they make a special tool you can put on a drill, pretty cheap at your local parts store.)

if you plan on taking the heads off again, check the cylinder walls for any scratches, gouges, etc. might have bad rings and it's letting oil and crankcase gasses into the cylinder.
have you performed a leakdown test?(on an aside, if the heads were resurfaced, your compression ratio will go up, and the amount of fuel/air mixture in the cylinder will decrease, not by much for either though.)

also, if you're doing this yourself, have someone there to help you. i did it by myself once on a plymouth i had(RIP), and it ended up costing me. have them help guide the cam through the bearing races so the cam does not contact the bearing surface. also make sure you have plenty of "pre-lube" for the cam, put it on any surface that has metal to metal contact, including the gears, and bearing races. don't wait for the oil pressure to do it for you.

not sure if you've done or thought about any of these things, but it can't hurt, and sure can help.

good luck

well the removal went well, found a piece of aluminum in the oil pan, so i pinpointed it to that. cleaned out the oil pan and all the areas i could with it off, and the old oil is thrown away. 3rd oil change in 36 miles. better safe than sorry.

camshaft went in well and we alos put on a new oil pump as long as the pan was off. new oil pan gasket and we are ready to reinstall this week sometime. ill post up if we have any problems or questions. thanks again guys.
