93 gmc sonoma temp gauge malfunctioning

My 93 Sonoma's temp gauge registers 250 degrees when the ignition is turned on. First noticed problem 6 months ago, check gauges light came on and noticed temp was at 250...turned on heater and fan to make it last 2 miles home. Replaced thermostat. Happened again after a week. Replaced thermostat again. Same thing happened the very next time I drove it after only 3 miles. Decided it was water pump and replaced it. After replacing water pump, I let engine warm up until thermostat opened, when it did, temp gauge went to 250. I let it cool and checked water level. Topped off water and that is when I noticed the ECT sensor was broken, and judging from the corrosion, had been for some time. Replaced ECT sensor. After installing new sensor, turned on ignition and temp gauge read 250. Is there a relay or fuse or something else that could make the temp gauge go haywire like this? Is there another sensor that could be replaced? I need my truck, but can't risk driving it and not be sure if it is really running hot or not. The truck has 175k on it, 4.3L automatic SLE 2WD. If you are saying that with the sensor unplugged it reads dead cold and when plugged in on a cold engine it reads 250 degrees, then obviously there is an issue with the sensor. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Sensor issue probably as said. There are likely two, one isn't for the dash gauge one is. If unplugged think you read cold all the time on correct one. Other is two wires one yellow one black not involved as I recall with gauge. Just FYI and it is a reason to pay attention till fixed. Run heat to floor ducts. If temp is too hot to touch it really is hot. If it goes cool it's low coolant level or really over heating. Check sensor first with this and plug to it, T
