1993 ford escort,1.9L,auto trans, 120000 mi.. The check eng light comes on temporarily. Can't seem to find any consistant factor. Such as temp., load. Flashes 172 code. Replaced O2 sensor, fuel filter, air filter, plugs. Runs good with light on or off. Although sometimes at freeway speeds it ocsilates between power on,off,on,off. a little more throtlle cures this. TPS tests good, mass air flow sensor has been a problem in the past(cleaning it helps). Vacuum lines are failing, but I can't detect any obvious leaks.

What method did you use to extract that code?

Ran a jumper wire from one diagnostic terminal to an other. Roughly, the smog mechanic did it. Then counted theflashes the check eng. light made.

There are no flash codes on a Ford so I don't know what he thought he was doing. It can be done with an anolog voltmeter or a professional scan tool, that's it.

It actually does flash a code, 172 it was, same result an OBD1 code scanner made.

No, I'm afraid it does not provide memory flash codes. You can go into a live wiggle test and see any code currently being set but you need a scan tool to see any codes stored in memory.
