'93 Nissan Pathfinder: Dead Engine Sign In

So I have a 1993 Nissan Pathfinder XE V6, 3.0L/181 CID, FI SOHC. 120K miles....

It currently has a no start... It's been that way since February. I posted on auto forums back when it died and I couldn't' get it to start and explained everything that had happened up to the point of it having a no start. I had several replies in which majority said it sounds like a blown head gasket. A few replied saying it could possibly be a crack in the cylinder... Everyone said i should either do an engine swap or an engine rebuild....

I'm trying to figure out what is the best way to go...Can anyone give me an idea? I posed an ad on craiglists for a mechanic to help me find an engine an swap it out.. I put on my ad that I wanted to pay no more that $600 for a good, low miles engine and no more than $600 for labor costs....Do you think these prices are unrealistic or too high? I've gotten a few responses for people who said they could do it for that price... But now I'm just wondering is that the way I should go...would it be cheaper to have someone just fix the head gasket in my current engine?

Bare with me, because I'm not all that knowledgable when it comes to automotives... :)

I think your really making a big mistake by trying to find your repair that way. This is not a situation where you want to hand $1200 to a person working out of a van that you don't know. You will have no recourse at all when things go wrong. You really need to find a reputable shop in your own area that you have references on and stick with them. You may pay a little more but you will have some guarantees.

You probably are shooting pretty low on the price also. These people have overhead to pay for. Used engines are not as cheap as you might expect and the rarer the engine, the higher the price.

Did you confirn that it was in fact a mechanical problem with the motor? It sure would suck to swap out a engine & still have the same problem...........

HT has some excellent advise if your are going to go the shadetree route... There are some good guys out there & also a lot of hacks..... 1st & foremost you want to be able to have a way to contact this person....other than a phone #, e mail, text, etc.... A big red flag is if the guy always picks up & drops off and will refuse to let you come by........ There is a reason for this & it's not "great customer service"
