93 Dodge Shadow trouble at startup

93 Dodge Shadow trouble at startup

I have a 93 Shadow with a 4 cyl 2.2 motor. I replaced the head gasket this past spring and did a total tune up with plugs, wires, rotor, belts, hoses, everything.
The past few weeks, the car does not idle well at startup. When cold, the engine will not set at high idle. The engine will idle very slowly and flounder until you add some throttle. At this time the idle will smooth out and the car will run fine. This happens when warm also.
Now as the weather has been getting colder, the motor will start but will die immediately. This will happen several times until the motor finally starts and stays running.
There have been no warning lights or check engine lights so it appears that no codes are being set. I am wondering can this be a vacuum leak of some sort or fuel related. Your help would be much appreciated.

Dan here is better at this but I suspect a problem with the idle speed motor. You may need a helper to start the car and watch it.
It gets its info from several sensors so without a code it's real guessing. I'm guessing that if you needed the head gasket that you went thru some overheating and about any thing electrical doesn't like that. Take a look around for connections and vacuum leaks too, T

Thanks for the help Tom. I replaced the idle speed motor and the TPS. Redid all vacuum connections in and around the throttle body and they are now pristine. I undid the battery terminal to reset the idle memory. The car is now hard starting when cold. It will crank and seem to catch but when the key is released, the engine dies immediatley. I have to restart 5 or 6 times before it finally catches. This is not a problem when it has run during the day. Also, on startup, the engine does not run at high idle. After it is warm, the engine runs fantastic. Idles nice, responsive, no issues. I took the air cleaner off last night to recheck the vacuum lines and noticed a strong fuel smell. Could I have a problem with the fuel pressure regulator or injector. Any help would be great. Thanks

There is a sensor near thermostat that tells the computer that the engine is cold that should be dirt cheap and may not be telling the right info but it should have kicked on a code but might not have. If it's cheap enough try that. It does go into anti-freeze so just drop the level a bit and it should come out like a spark plug, T

Also, I have had a few 2.2 Dodge's in my shop with a hard start and they drank gas. All have been faulty fuel pressure regulators. So, doing a fuel pressure test with a quality guage might not hurt. You can retrieve codes on this car by turning the ignition----on off on off on and leaving the key on but not starting the engine at all. The check engine light will start flashing out the codes.
