92 silverado 1500 4.3 123k miles

trucks been perfect until recent cold weather, then my tach and speedometer went crazy just going all over the place with the engine bogging down and cutting out just as I would normally shift up. the next morning was even colder and truck would turn over but not start.. I checked fuel filter and pump and they were good, but was getting no spark. changed ign coil and module and now I don't know what to do next....

what comes to mind :
check alternator DIODES - they wiil often cause those speedo type issues....
What is fuel pressure? Not the easiest check might want to change filter and tap in to line there.
ECT is critical in cooler weather.


you changed ICM and coil is there spark now?
Have you checked for codes - check even if light is off.

haven't checked diodes, fuel pressure is good, still no spark..

How about the pick up coil? Those can be affected by temperature. Do you have power to the ignition coil and the module from the ignition switch?

idk how to check pu coil or ign switch? i'm no mechanic

Do you have a volt/ohm meter?

One easy way for you to check it would be to go to the auto parts store and get a reman distributor and a spark tester.

Just plug it in and spin the drive gear by hand with the ignition turned on. Connect a spark tester to the ignition coil and see if you have spark. If you do, it is probably the pickup coil or wiring issue in the distributor itself. You can always take the new distributor back if it doesn't cause spark to happen.


edit: you have to ground the distributor to the engine if you do this test. Just take your jumper cables and connect the clamp to the distributor housing and the other end to something metal on the engine.

no meter and limited funds right now.. I will try to look it up on how to do that tomorrow in the daylight though. thanks for ya'lls help, i'll be back with my results.

BOOM she's going!! guess the day warmed up and she changed her mind about not starting.. no rough idle, no wacky tach or speedometer..

Did you actually stick the new distributor in or did you try the test I gave you above? Did spark come back when you tried the new distributor?

HT is right. It is going to have to mess up again, so you can do checks. Try wiggling wires and harnesses around under the hood with the engine running to see if you can get it to act up again. Your not going to get too far unless you have a volt/ohm meter and/or a 12 volt test lamp if it is indeed an electrical issue going on.

When it messes up again check for spark at the coil itself. Inspect the coil wire and make sure it is in good condition and not leaking spark to ground. You'll spend more money playing the guessing game than if you actually made some electrical checks. You can pick up an incandescent, not LED, automotive 12 volt test light really cheap. They are not hard to use and also make great spark testers.

Don't flame the moderators on here. This is a warning. HT is right. The problem has to be occurring to figure what is causing it.
