92 bonneville 189,000 miles runs well most of time. When gas guage read app. 1/2 engine will not idle add gas problem clears up.

You need to check your fuel pressure when this is happening. Electric fuel pumps are cooled and lubricated by the fuel in the tank and the way yours is acting could be the pump starting to seize up or a baffle problem inside the tank.

martin; Are you certain of the accuracy of the fuel guage? How many gallons does it take to fill it when it shows 1/2 tank. If the guage is accurate, a long shot could be a faulty gas cap.

It's my daughters she just bought it. They will fill it tommorrow. I've got a feeling the fuel pump is getting tired.
Will check back after fill

Take a fuel pressure reading now. If you really think fuel pump is the issue and it might be think hard about NOT filling up the tank but just add so many gallons as it's a PITA to drain them for a fuel pump job.

Loren already mentioned the gas cap. Seems silly - it can hold a vacuum that the fuel pump can't overcome properly. Just loosen it when at the 1/2 mark - it may go whoosh and run fine again for a while.

If that works - it really could be just the wrong cap or a vapor recovery issue to find and fix.

GMs - fuel pumps are somewhat common. Can be finicky at first. As our new tech just to this site "Hammer Time" eluded to - check the pressure WHEN it acts up. There should be a fitting on a fuel rail on the engine and silly tester with instructions is about $40 bucks for a basic deal. You can go broke with better stuff and all the adaptors. AutoZone should have the tester and the spec.

GUYS - DO YOU HAVE THE SPEC FOR THIS CAR? AZ is giving me fits with a change and won't allow a quick check which I used to do thru their site - others may have it.

Note: Said already - fuel pumps really HATE running low on gas or worse running out. They are cooled by the fuel so running too low is a big NO NO!

Note II: Spray some penetrating oil on the gas tank straps now! They can give you one nasty fight on a 92 if you do have to take it down. Whole new ones should be readily available if they are hopelessly rusted.

Good luck - measure twice - cut once and dang intermittent crap will drive anyone nuts,

T

Here are the fuel pressure specs.
Remember, there is no further margin for error and the pressure has to remain within these parameters at all times to run properly.

Ignition ON Engine OFF 40.5 to 47.0 psi
With Regulator Vacuum Applied 3.0 - 10.0 psi less than Ignition ON Engine OFF

Thanks for that spec HT! I didn't have it but know the GMs are fussy. 2 silly lbs off they can act up - more so when colder out,

Do you guys think she should drive it like this? It runs perfectly as long as you are above 1/2 (on the guage).

I certainly wouldn't consider it reliable. You need to get to the bottom of what is causing it before you can make any informed decisions about it.

Agree also - this really can't be trusted as is. Still need to find out why as Hammer Time said. Test the gas cap! It could be that silly! They get switched by mistake sometimes even though they fit they need to be the right ones,
