My 92 jimmy will crank then run for a few seconds then shut down when cold. When i keep cranking it it will run a little longer each time. After 10 to 15 attempts at this it will stay running. When engine is warmed up it runs good and starts right up. I have replaced fuel filter, IAC and fuel pressure regulator all with no change in problem. A friend of mine says it is the distributor causing the problem and not a fuel related issue. He is very knowledgeable with chevy engines but i'm not sure. If i put a distributor in and its not the problem im stuck with it. Has anybody heard of this issue and does someone have an idea of what it might be if not a distributor issue

Sounds like you may have a bad fuel pump. You should be testing the pressure with a fuel pressure gauge but it's a little difficult to hook up on that engine. I would remove the air filter and see if you can keep it running by spraying carb cleaner into the intake. Check for injector pulse with a noid light also. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

15 psi....pretty sure you need at least 60 psi for this engine. GM ASEP 26 SCC Milford ASE certified in Brakes and Electrical on Thursday April 5th 2012

Actually that should be a TBI system so 15 is right where it should be..... I'm guessing the engine runs good after it's warmed up??? If that is the case I would be looking for not enough fuel or too much air when cold......If it's running good then it's probably a lack of fuel problem... I would probably start with the temp sensors, look at a data stream and make sure they make sense for the conditions... If it's 50° outside and the temp sensor is reading 150°.....that would be a problem.............

.I have no access to scan tools so I replaced temp sensor...no change at all Just so u know the trucks starts immediatly and runs for few seconds then dies. The more I try to start it the longer it stays running. After 7or8 tries it stays running and runs real good . This problem only happens when engine is cold. Have replaced fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator and IAC. Egr valve is good,, I'm runnin oput of ideas.....H E L P

Might have2 different temp sensors- one for the gauge and the other for the computer. If you changed the one for the gauge it will not affect the computer.

Wow, I didn't mean for you to go out and change the sensor... I'm just thinking out loud here, I was hoping you could've looked at a reading to confirm this. This isn't a common problem so I'm just running some basic stuff thru my mind on what I would look at as a possible problem. One thing you can do, I believe there is a comp ground on the t stat housing or around there, take it apart and clean it, while you at it you may as well check all the ground connections and clean them...... I know it's tough trying to check a system with limited tools.... You might want to check around to shops with good reps on the cost of a diag.. With what you've changed so far you would probably be close..... The bad thing here is with what's left, it starts getting real expensive..... But check & clean the grounds, pull the battery and have it load tested.... Most parts stores do this for free.... Just for the heck of it, clean out the throttle body real good......
