My 92 Acclaim 2.5L is having problems with engine overheating......I have changed out the thermostat, checked coolant levels checked hoses and am at a loss for what is ailing this Mopar. how would I test the water pump or radiator.....the temp gauge goes to very hot then to normal and keeps cycling back and forth. I will change out the thermostat again to see if that solves the problem (inexpensive fix). What risk to I face if I totally remove the thermostat? 1992 2.5L does not have a lot of pollution control items and we are now coming out of winter in Michigan (where I live)

Thermostat may or may not have been the original overheating cause but now you are probably dealing with air in the system with it fluctuating as said.

Here's a link to assist for purging air out and then when that's known ok the real cause of overheat if not solved will be easier to diagnose.

That link should click to this same site for the purging issues,

To add; Don't remove the thermostat. The engine will run too cool and then, run too rich. Poor fuel economy, internal engine damage from oil contamination, catalyst damage, O2 sensor degradation, ect.

Good catch Loren - NEVER run without a thermostat for any amount of time for almost everything! I missed that in the post the it was an idea - no to that idea,
