92 Firebird stalls after stopping. Sign In

My name is Robert and I have a 92 Pontiac Firebird. Two days ago it started stalling on me when I would come to a stop. There is no chugging or any sign that it is about to die when it does this. It has done this 13 times in the last two days. Three or four times it would start right back up when I would kick the key over, but most of the time it just sits there and cranks but won't fire. The distributer was replaced about 10 months ago and the coil replaced abut 8 months ago. The ECU was replaced a year ago. I have checked the Idle Air Control vale, cleaned the throttle body and checked for vacumn leaks at the advise of a friend. But still nothing seems to help. I am usually pretty good at figuring things like this out but this one has me stumpted. Can anyone help me Please?

Robert; We need to check for spark when the engine dies and won't restart. If you are lacking spark, the first thing I'd check would be the crank sensor. With that said, the ignition control modules were a common failure point as well. Once we determine that you are, in fact, lacking spark, we can go from there. Let us know. Could also be a fuel delivery problem.

Thanks I will check there next. I have good fuel pressure so I dont think it is a delivery problem.

Robert; The reason I mentioned fuel was that it could be overfueling. Hopefully, not.Smile

I am going through my Chiltons and can't find anything about a crank position sensor.

Probably because your vehicle doesn't use oneUnsure. Sorry for the misguided info. Go ahead and check for spark, though.

No problem, it happens. I will check for spark the next time it decides to play dead on me and we can go from there.

I forgot to mention that when it starts back up after one of its episodes the tach will jump about 1000 RPM but the engine doesnt increase speed.

You dont have a crank sensor! The pickup is in the distributor...you might need a new one or you might have a wire grounding out either outside of the distributor or you need to test the distributor.

I am still having issues with my Firebird stalling at idle. I have replaced the fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, ignition module (from roiginal distributer) and still no luck on fixing the problem. I have good fuel pressure at the fuel rail and am not flooding the motor. The only way it will start after stalling is to spray it with starting fluid and then I have to keep it at least at 1000 rpm's. I am thinking cloged injectors and/or IAC valve. Any ideas?

check for vacuum leaks...I had my knock sensor wire come loose and did the same thing for while then after the engine got hot it would not accerate right. the knock sensor is located aboe the strter and below the header.. it is a pain to get too..
