'92 Cherokee won't start...issues

Hello to all, My name's Mike and I am at my wits end with my 1992 Jeep Cherokee inline 6 cylinder, 4.0L. Standard transmission. I replaced the motor on this truck about two years ago with a rebuilt bench job. Motor has less then 8,000 miles since rebuild. Been sitting the past year or so and ran once or twice a month to keep it lubed and what not. About a month ago I noticed a hickup in the way it was running, at stop lights, when accelerating. The "Check Engine" light finally came on a week or so later, checked the codes and it said "Injector/Bank #1 not responding". Felt like a misfire when it ran. Took truck home, put noid light on ALL and they worked fine. Stethoscope to ALL and fine. I have replaced: Cap/Rotor, plugs, wires, distributor, fuel filter, O2, injector seals...etc. Did compression test. All cylinders ran about 120psi after 7 cranks except #1 & #3, they were about 110psi. Put some motor oil in cylinders and psi neither dropped nor rose on second go round. Was lacking fuel pressure to fuel rail. When Schrade valve was pressed to relieve pressure only a trickle came out. Replaced dirty fuel filter, got good pressure. Truck was running really rough before but throughout replacing all these things won't even start now. When I crank on it now it sounds like it wants to start but everytime it gets to one cylinder it sounds like there is something holding back the whole motor rotation process. It makes a popping/backfire sound through throttle body when cranking. Stuck valve maybe? I've got fuel, air, fire...but no running motor. VERY frustrating!!! Does this sound like a valve issue? Or low end issue? CPS is new, but could still be an issue I know. Thanx ahead of time, Mike

What was the exact code number? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I'd be lying if I tried to pull a number outta my mind. That was about three weeks ago, had a few beers since and haven't been able to get this running in the past week or more to get it back to the auto part store to use their code scanner again. It was a specific injector code for cylinder #1 tho, I'll swear to that.

This a oddball thing I have ran across on some heaps . Remove dist cap and rotor . Take a close look at the reluctor wheel . See if it will move by hand . Look for roll pin that locks it in place. I have seen them come out and wheel slips. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH

Distributor is all new, every bit oil pump drive flange up to cap. Was doing this with old setup so I just replaced it all. Feels and sounds like something in the motor holding it back. Gonna strip off the head in the next day or two and have the valves checked I guess for now. It'll crank over but hesitates on certain points and when it does you can hear a popping thud like sound through the throttle body...using a remote start button underhood.

So it's taken longer than expected but I started to take the head off last night. Have remaining head bolts to pull off but need to pick up a deep socket to remove the stud bolts today. Found pushrod in cylinder 2 resembles a lighting bolt. Kept everything in order as removed. Intake valve. Gonna pull head and have it checked tomorrow. A bit closer I hope.

Head cleaned up well. No issues with valve stems or gooped up guides. Gonna replace bent pushrod and reassemble. Hope it was just a bad rod to begin with. Low mileage so we shall see.
