91 buick skylark, 2.5 liter, starts and runs fine for a short distance then stalls, restarts fine and will stay running in park or neutral but when you put it in drive or reverse it stalls immediately...if you let it sit about an hour then it runs fine again for a short distance, then repeats. Clueless here as to what the problem might be, any help would be greatly appreciated.

pen; Since it runs okay when cold, I'm suspecting a lean condition or an IAC problem. When the engine is cool, the PCM adds fuel since this is fuel injected. Running rich during the warm up time can mask a vacuum leak or partially plugged filter. I'd recommend checking the fuel filter, first. Could be that simple. Check the engine for vacuum leaks after it's warm. Listen for a hissing sound. The IAC (idle air control) can become dirty and sticky, over time. It's very common for this to happen. The IAC opens and closes (electrical solenoid) to allow air into the system to control idle speed. If the other checks come up negative, have the injection system cleaned. This should be done every 30-40K miles, anyway, so you can look at this as maintenance. If nothing else, you should notice an improvement in fuel economy and performance. (MotorVac fuel system cleaning is best, and should be available at most independent shops or the dealer).

Appreciate the advice. Do you happen to know where the fuel filter is located on it, been under the car with a small floor jack and was unable to locate it.

Should be on the driver's side, ahead of the rear tire. (I hope)Wink Some are closer to the tank.
