91 Tempest: rough idle, may stall - HELP! Sign In

Hi,

I have a 91 Pontiac Tempest, 4 cylinder, 182,000 kms, automatic. I bought it last summer. The thing sometimes lurches forward when I shift it into park (it kind of rolls). When I idle at a stoplight, for instance, it's really rough and feels like it's going to stall. I was driving up a hill and doing about 40 kms the other day and it felt like it was going to konk out. Crazy

I recently ran some fuel injection cleaner through it but it doesn't seem to help.

Any ideas???

Thanks,
anwin

Lots of ideas and it’s kind of hard to tell you where to start looking for this problem?
Tune-up when was the last time that the spark plugs were changed, the ignition coil(s) and ignition wires were checked? Vacuum leaks as in a vacuum hose that has become cracked and allowing false air to enter the engine. The EGR (exhaust gas recalculation) valve maybe be stuck partly open allowing exhaust gases to reenter the intake manifold when its not suppose to be.
Restricted exhaust as in a plugged catalytic converter, if exhaust can’t get out of the engine the fresh air and fuel mixture can’t get in. Overall engine condition is the poor old motor just worn out. A compression test on the cylinders will tell you a lot; low compression, low power.
Then after all the basics are known to be good and the car is still running poorly; we can then start looking at the electronics. Does the computer have full control of fuel and ignition?
I don’t want to make it sound like it’s impossible to find the problem but it’s not always as simple as; it’s this or that. It takes some legwork to perform tests; checking individual systems to find the root problem.
