1991 ford Bronco, Eddie Bauer edition, 5.8 liter engine, 141,000 miles. It has a hard time starting, then when started and just idling it will either die, or start revving up and down on its own, most often just dies. In order to drive you have to keep constant pressure on the gas peddle. We replaced the MAP sensor, all the spark plugs and wires, battery is ok, distributor cap, rotor, air filter, tried a different ignition coil as well, new fuel filter. Son is trying to put in new gas and some of that gunkout to clean the fuel lines. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you say, hard time starting; Could you try and describe that? Cold, hot, extended cranking, ect. You might want to take a fuel pressure test. With the engine off, remove the vacuum line going to the fuel pressure regulator and see if it's wet with fuel. If it's wet, the regulator is bad and will cause overfueling. The surging condition could be from that, a vacuum leak, or an IAC problem.

Here is what my son says, It turns over and the engine will make a whiny noise then the engine will kick and rumble but won't start, when it does start it stalls shortly afterward. Does that help?

Hmmmm. Sorry, not really. Wonder if the starter is kicking out prematurely and just spinning? Hate to even suggest this, but, if the flex plate is damaged (as in the teeth) it could cause what I'm not hearing. sigh. But, that wouldn't have any effect in the way it is running. If it is having a problem with pre-ignition, that can cause a 'kick back' sort of effect when trying to start, but almost always when hot. If this fits the symptoms, have him disconnect the coil wire and crank the engine to see if it sounds 'normal'.
