I have a '91 Celica that idles poorly, fouls the plugs, and dumps fuel into the oil. A mechanic friend believes I have a bad sensor, but the computor is not throwing any codes. Two mechanics have been playing with it for weeks trying to find what is causing this. Please help if you can.

Start with checking the fuel pressure with a guage. If the pressure is too high, excessive fuel will get delivered when the injectors open. If the pressure is normal, it could be a sensor problem or may even be that the timing belt could have jumped a tooth. If you have a sensor out of range, the computer may not always pick it up and turn on the engine light. No codes only means the computer hasn't seen anything abnormal yet. Another thing to check is backpressure. If you have a converter or muffler getting clogged, the same symptoms may appear. Steve

i have thought of 1 thing if you haven't checked it yet i would before doing much else it is a esey check of the fuel presure regulator to see if the diaphram if bad and spraying fuel in to you intake. so just remove the vacuum hose going to the regulator and see if there is gas in the hose also turn turn over the motor and see if it leaks then if it does replace it if .

Good point to see if the regulator is leaking. However if it is stuck closed it will drive the pressure up but doesn't necessarily leak fuel. This is why I say to use a Guage. Steve
